Saudi Arabia car import rules in 2026
- Age limit: cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 tons must be no more than 5 years old, not counting the current year. In 2026 that means 2021 or newer (ZATCA).
- Banned: salvage cars (flood, fire, accident or structural damage), former taxis and police cars, cars converted from right-hand drive, and cars with an altered chassis number.
- The car must meet the Saudi fuel economy standard (SASO). Ask the seller to confirm the model qualifies before you pay.
- For a car coming from a Gulf country, the UAE export certificate is the ownership document at Saudi customs.
- Residents can import one car every 3 years and cannot sell it for 3 years. GCC citizens can import two cars a year.
- Customs may value the car on your invoice or on its own price lists, with 10% depreciation a year up to 50%.
Rules last checked: November 2026 (ZATCA and SASO). Confirm with Saudi customs or a licensed clearing agent before you pay.

Why buy your Saudi car in the UAE
- UAE cars are GCC spec, built for Gulf heat and left-hand drive from the factory.
- The drive is short: one border crossing at Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha.
- Ask for the VIN and the history: salvage and flood cars are refused at Saudi customs.
- Check the model year on the documents: anything older than 2021 cannot be imported in 2026.

Questions buyers ask
Can I buy a car in the UAE and take it to Saudi Arabia?
Yes, if it meets the Saudi rules: no more than 5 years old not counting the current year (2021 or newer in 2026), not a salvage car, and within the Saudi fuel economy standard. The UAE export certificate serves as the ownership document at customs.
How old can an imported car be in Saudi Arabia?
Cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 tons must be no more than 5 years old, not counting the current year. In 2026 that is model year 2021 or newer. Cars over 30 years old can come in as antiques but cannot be driven on public roads.
What taxes do I pay in Saudi Arabia?
ZATCA charges 5% customs duty and 15% VAT on the value plus duty. If duty was already paid when the car entered the UAE, ask your clearing agent whether it can be credited.
How many cars can a resident import?
Residents can import one private car every 3 years and cannot sell it for 3 years. GCC citizens can import two cars every 12 months.
How does the car get from Dubai to Saudi Arabia?
By road through the Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha border crossing. The seller can quote a car carrier truck to your city, or you can collect it.
Are salvage or accident cars allowed?
No. Saudi customs bans cars with flood, fire, accident or structural damage. Ask the seller for the VIN and history before you pay.
